在第三世界地區，對於「現代」的欲求與「殖民」的夢靨幾乎是不可分割、一體兩面的基本精神狀態，這兩種相互滲透而又矛盾的龐大驅力，在過去的一、兩個世紀中制約了我們主體性的形成。反思當前的思想困境，「超克殖民」必然意味著「超克現代」。 本讀本試圖從帝國主義世界史、戰後經濟、性別運動、學術思想的論爭等視角出發，收錄以台灣為基地及亞洲各地的重要研究，企圖使讀者能在閱讀過程中形成為區域性的相互參照，藉以深入東亞社會內在的肌理去推進去殖民運動尚未完成的台灣。
